One of my favorite pastimes is shopping in the Strip District to with my sister Denise and good friend Lisa. We have been going for a little while now and each visit is filled with fantastic buys and a general good time. The Strip District is an area of town just outside the main business district of Pittsburgh along the Allegheny river. For about 1.5 miles you can find all kinds of markets, specialty stores, restaurants and nightclubs along three main streets and the various side streets between.
The first place we stopped in was an Asian market. Look at the beautiful fruit below. I've seen persimmons before, so I knew what they were but I didn't realize they were a common in Asian cuisine.
The other markets in the strip are equally interesting. Not only do they have unusual produce but it's also very affordable. Check out this large container of heirloom cherry tomatoes I bought for only $1.00.
Nearby we spotted cactus pears, something our father used to by when I was a child. Denise bought some and we tried it later. I thought it would have a sour taste but it actually taste similar to a watermelon. The inside was a beautiful dark magenta-very pretty. Which reminded me of Bobby Flay's Cactus Pear Margarita's? They are made with cactus pear juice which you can order on Amazon. It's a gorgeous looking cocktail and very tasty. Prickly Pear Syrup
Towards the end of the strip is a beautiful floral shop that I always have to check out. Roxanne's Dried Flowers is full of unique high end gifts, designer dried arrangements and a few interesting plants for sale on the back patio.
This time of year they had beautiful wreaths and fresh Bittersweet for sale.
Inside are all kinds of dried florals for purchase including pre-made arrangements, and other fancy accouterments.
Just about the time our bags are getting heavy it's time for lunch. Our two favorites are Kaya and Reynas. I hope you enjoyed a taste of the Strip. There are so many more shops and places to show you but I'll leave that for another visit.
Next time you visit our fair city don't miss The Strip. What are some of your favorite haunts?
