DIY Nesting Material for Birds Hanging Ball

Fill a grapevine ball with nesting materials that birds can use to build their nests. Hang it outdoors and watch the birds flock to it.

Instructions

  • Tie some twine to the ball to use as a hanger around 5 ft or longer.
  • Start filling the ball with larger items such as coconut fiber, wool and moss.
  • Then add in smaller pieces like groups of twigs, cut natural raffia strands.
  • Finish with bits of dried plant material, leaves, and bits of bark.
  • Hang the nesting material ball from a tree branch somewhere you can see from inside.
  • Check on the ball after some time to see if you need to refill it.

Notes

If you don't have a grapevine ball, you can make one with wild vines. Or use some chicken wire or a suet feeder to house the nesting materials.

  • Natural Twine or sisal in small lengths
  • Natural Wool
  • Untreated Moss
  • Dried grasses or straw
Don't Use
  • Human Hair - pet hair may be ok if it doesn't have any chemicals on it
  • Dryer Lint
  • Anything with chemicals, including grass trimmings, dyed yarn etc..
  • Anything plastic
