Learn how to gather nesting materials for birds to fill a hanging ball placed outside that they can freely use and enjoy.

If you've been reading this blog, then you know I enjoy birds. As spring approaches, I wanted to offer a ball of goodies for the birds to use as they build their nests. The idea is to hang it in the backyard from our dogwood tree, where we can watch it from our porch and/or kitchen window.

Supplies
- grapevine ball/sphere 6 - 8 inches
- twine to hang the ball
- coconut fiber
- excelsior
- twigs
- pine needles
- roving wool
- moss
- leaves and other dry plant material
- raffia around 5 inches long
- bark
If you don't have a grapevine ball, you can make one with wild vines. Or use some chicken wire or a suet feeder to house the nesting materials.

If you often use Coco liners for your flower baskets, then you may have noticed that the birds love this stuff for their nests.
Mainly, you want to stick with natural materials. Be careful not to use any materials that may have come in contact with any chemicals or pesticides.
Good Nesting Material Ideas
- Pine Needles
- Twigs and Bark
- Coco Fiber
- Excelsior
- Natural Twine or sisal in small lengths
- Natural Wool
- Untreated Moss
- Dried grasses or straw
Don't Use the Following:
- Human Hair - pet hair may be ok if it doesn't have any chemicals on it
- Dryer Lint
- Anything with chemicals, including grass trimmings, dyed yarn
- Anything plastic

Creating the Nesting Materials Ball
Step 1. Tie twine to a cross-section of the grapevine ball. Give yourself 5-8 ft to work with so that you'll have plenty to tie outside on a branch.

Step 2. Start filling the ball with your nesting materials. Stuff in the large items like moss, excelsior, and wool, followed by groups of twigs, plant material, small sticks, and lengths of raffia.

Step 3. Finish by filling in holes with smaller bits of dried plants and leaves.

Hang your nesting materials ball from a tree branch somewhere that you can see from inside or while sitting on your porch, and enjoy watching the birds go to town.
