This DIY bird bath is an easy project and will look great in your garden while helping the birds and other wildlife have a water refuge.

DIY bird bath from pots in the garden.

Here's a fun and easy project using plastic flower pots and a large saucer to create a pedestal shaped bird bath.

How to Make Your Own Birdbath

    Supplies

    • 2 Plastic plant pots
    • 1 Large plant saucer
    • Scrap wood for a flat base
    • Rocks or sand to weigh the pot down.
    • Gorilla Construction Adhesive
    • Spray paint
Two plastic pots and a large saucer.

I already had the fancier looking black pot (shown above) and I picked up the small pot and larger saucer at the local big box store. You might find some good pieces to upcycle from your local thrift store too.

Pot and saucer glued together with the saucer on top.

All you need to do is glue them together. However, the first time I tried it the bird bath was too top-heavy so you need to fill the bottom pot with some rocks or sand to weigh it down. I also ended up using a piece of scrap wood on the bottom to keep it level in the garden and add a little more stability.

I used Gorilla Construction Adhesive to glue the pieces together. However, you could try a two part epoxy glue or other good outdoor adhesives that work on plastic.

Pot tower glued to a wood base and spray painted with green and aqua paint.

Once the glue has cured, (typically 24 hours) you can spray paint the piece so that the parts all look the same. I used a pretty aqua and green spray paint to give it an aged verdigris look.

All you have to do is find a good spot (preferably somewhere not too windy) and add some water to the top basin.

Add a rock or two as a landing spot for the birds. This will help keep small birds from drowning.

Also, consider adding some mosquito dunks in the basin to kill any larvae in the water and change it weekly if you can.

I love the way this homemade birdbath looks in the garden. I hope the birds love it too.

Brilliant, will have a go at this. Question, what are mosquito dunks, we seem to just use plants to help us which do not always work!!?
      Thanks for your wonderful ideas.

Carol, mosquito dunks are round disks that you set in the water. They contain a larvicide that will kill mosquitos and black fly larvae but are said to be safe for people and animals. Here in the States, you can find them many places like Home Depot or online at Amazon. If you search for them you'll find lots of options.
