This recipe for slow cooker pizza is a fun way to bake pizza in a non-traditional way for a tasty, deep dish style pizza.

I never thought about making pizza in a slow cooker, so I had to try it. It tasted good, but it does take considerable time. However, sometimes timing can work to your advantage on a busy day with lots of activities. And if you don't have access to an oven for some reason and you like a thick crust or deep dish Chicago style pizza, this would be a good way to utilize your slow cooker.

Ingredients
- pizza dough
- marinara or pizza sauce
- shredded cheese - I like a mix of mozzarella and provolone
- 8 ounces sauteed sliced mushrooms (optional)
- 2 teaspoons olive oil

How to Make Slow Cooker Pizza
Step 1. Place the dough ball in a large mixing bowl with a little oil on the bottom and cover with plastic wrap. Let it sit on the counter for 1 hour.
In the meantime, you can saute the mushrooms in a pan on the stove with a little olive oil. You can also take this time to cook other toppings such as Italian sausage, ground beef, or vegetables like green bell peppers.

Step 2. Place the dough ball on a lightly floured surface.

Step 3. Grease the bottom and the sides of the slow cooker with olive oil or cooking spray.

Step 4. Roll out the dough larger than the size of your slow cooker. You want to have enough dough to reach up the sides.

Step 5. Place the dough inside the slow cooker. Then pull the sides of the dough up onto the sides of the slow cooker.

Step 6. Spoon on a little marinara or your favorite jar of pizza sauce.

Step 7. Set the cooked mushrooms on the sauce and cover with shredded cheese. You can also use other favorite pizza toppings without pre-cooking them, like pepperoni slices or olives.

Step 8. Cover with the slow cooker lid and bake for 2.5 to 3 hours. You want the edges to be golden brown. The image above was the pizza at 2 hours. It was just starting to brown. However, if it's not cooked long enough, the crust may be undercooked at the bottom. You can lift it out and cut it to check if you want.

Step 9. Use a couple of spatulas to lift the pizza out of the slow cooker and place it on a cutting board to slice.

Serve with grated Parmesan cheese and hot pepper flakes if you like. The result is a thick crust that's slightly chewy and delicious.
