Embroidered Sneakers: Fun and Affordable Summer Style

    by Patti Estep · Jun 14, 2018

Make your own designer embroidered sneakers for a mere fraction of the cost. A fun new accessory you'll wear all summer long.

    Embroidered sneakers tutorial

Embroidered fashion is everywhere now, and of course, if it involves plants and flowers I'm probably going to love it.

    Embroidered espadrilles

Recently I purchased these cute embroidered espadrilles for the summer. They weren't too expensive, but they got me thinking about how easy it might be to try and DIY a pair.

Can you believe these are only $6.00 at Walmart? Admittedly they are not the best construction, but I thought for a trendy craft they would be okay.

However, if you want you can get a nicer pair like the one shown above for about $10 more on Amazon. (click on the image)

This technique would also look great on these mule espadrilles from payless.

    Embroidered appliques

I found these iron on appliques at the same Walmart. I think I spent less than $8.00 for all of them.

You can also find a ton of cute appliques on Amazon (above) in a variety of styles and prices.

Although they are considered iron-on appliques, I used a hot glue gun to set them in place. Consider cutting your pieces like I did here with the birds and branches.

You could also try using a fabric glue to make sure your appliques stay on. Aleene has one called "Ok to Wash It," which would be good for this kind of project.

These faux embroidered sneakers turned out pretty cute, but I think they need a little extra adornment.

Maybe these pretty pink flowers added alongside of the sunflower would complete the look.

What do you think? More is more, or is it too much?

This is such a cute idea and right up my alley because I like all things unique. Now I'm going to be on the look out for a comfy slip on because these would be fun to wear to the Saturday Market. Maybe I could make a green pair?

Carole, you are always so full of great ideas. I know they make the same shoes in white so you can easily paint them green and go to town with the embellishments. Send me a pic when you do.

These are so cute, Patti, and I love Deb's idea to add some beads too. The really fun thing about them is that you can choose appliques to coordinate with specific outfits...which means I'll need a few pair. 🙂

They'd be fun to make with my daughter too. She always wants us to match when we clothes shop together, and since she's only 10, it's been impossible to do so far. This is very doable though and we could easily have matching sneakers! Thanks for sharing a fun and creative idea.

Karen, this would be a great project to work on with your daughter. The sneakers at Walmart also come in white.

So pretty Patti, I think I'll run out and get me a pair and some appliques, but I'm also a beader so will be adding some beads too!!! Oh and yes more embellishment is best until it isn't LOL, I'd add the cherry blossom branches.

Beads would be so pretty Deb. Love that idea. I know what you mean when you say "more is best, until it isn't." Sometimes I just don't know when to quit. 🙂
