    Lily of the Valley Plant

    Learn about growing and caring for the lovely lily of the valley plant. It's a gorgeous, spring bloomer that's low maintenance and highly fragrant.

    You've probably heard of this unique flowering plant.

    🎵 White coral bells
    Upon a slender stalk
    Lilies of the valley
    Down my garden walk

    Oh, don’t you wish
    That you could
    hear them ring.
    That will happen only
    when the fairies sing. 🎵

    Perhaps you remember this song from childhood (lyrics above). But did you know that it's very easy to grow? Lily of the valley is a pretty perennial plant with unique white flowers among deep green foliage in the springtime, and the flowers are very fragrant.

    Lily of the valley flowers grow well in most climates. It thrives in shady areas, under trees and shrubs. However, it can take some sun, making it very versatile.

    It's a small plant growing only 10 inches tall, making it a good edging plant or front of a perennial border, and it works well as a ground cover.

    Lily of the Valley Facts

    Scientific Name: Convallaria majalis

    Plant Type: Perennial

    Sun Requirements: Partial Shade to Full Shade

    Bloom Time: Early Spring to Late Spring

    USDA Zone Hardiness: 3 - 7

    Other: Spreads easily by rhizomes. Some say it can be invasive. It's also deer and rabbit tolerant. And, it's very fragrant, making it a wonderful choice for flower arrangements.

    Here's a picture of some growing next to my front sidewalk in very early spring.

    Lily of the valley die back late in the season.

    Later in the season, it will die back to the ground, and if it gets too much such will burn out. However, even if that happens, it's very likely to come back next year.

    The bell-shaped flowers are undeniably quaint and special, making an amazing bouquet that's simple and very fragrant. These flowers symbolize purity and virtue and are often popular in wedding arrangements.

    If you are not already growing lily of the valley, you might want to add it to your garden flower wish list. It's a great low-maintenance plant that can be planted in many locations with a charming looking flower that smells heavenly.
