Flank steak sliced into thin strips.

How to Make Stir Fried Beef & Broccoli

Step 1. Slice the flank steak into 1/4 inch strips. Then cut the strips into 2-3 inch pieces.

Strips of flank steak in a bowl with marinade.

Step 2. Marinate the beef (15-20 mins.) in a bowl with 1/4 cup tamari or soy sauce and 1/4 cup rice vinegar.

Beef and broccoli sauce in a bowl with a whisk.

Step 3. Whisk together all the ingredients for the sauce and let it sit.

Step 4. Cook the broccoli in the microwave.

Grated garlic and ginger sauteed in a large skillet in oil.

Step 5. Saute grated garlic and ginger in some olive oil or vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok.

Marinated beef strips cooked in the skillet.

Step 6. Start browning the beef in the same pan on each side (approx. 2-3 mins)

All beef and broccoli ingredients in the skillet.

Step 7. Add the broccoli, carrots, and sauce to the pan and simmer for 5 minutes.

    Options and Substitutions

    • Beef - I use flank steak but you could substitute skirt steak, flat-iron steak, or beef sirloin.
    • Rice Vinegar - You can use white wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar, or some white wine as a substitute.
    • Broccoli - You don't have to use frozen florets. Often the grocery store will sell fresh florets. Or you can use a whole stalk of broccoli. Just make sure to cut it up into small sections.
    • Carrots - I add carrot sticks for color and flavor but they are optional. At the same time, you could add a few other vegetables such as chopped celery, bell peppers, sliced mushrooms, or snow peas.
    • Tamari - I like to use tamari instead of soy sauce as it's less salty but has a great flavor. Soy sauce is perfectly fine for this recipe too.
Beef and broccoli served on a plate with rice on the side.

Serve with a side of rice or make it low carb and skip the rice or use rice cauliflower.

Any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for a few days.

Stir fried beef and broccoli in a bowl over rice with chopsticks across the top.

And, if you are a fan, you can serve it in a bowl over rice and enjoy it with your chopsticks.
