Gardening Podcasts - A Fun Way to Learn While Working in the Garden

    by Patti Estep · Aug 6, 2018

My favorite gardening podcasts. Listening to the experts is a great way to learn, and helps the time fly while you are tackling garden chores.

Peonies with podcast icon for this gardening podcasts post.

If you are a podcast listener then maybe you've already discovered some of the great gardening shows out there.  I really love listening to them as I work in the garden. There's something about hearing other gardeners talk that I find particularly appealing. It's like I'm talking to one of my friends and sharing thoughts about our garden challenges and favorite plants.

    Favorite Gardening Podcasts

A Way to Garden with Margaret Roach

Margaret Roach has a ton of experience including working for Martha Stewart. She is easy to listen to and down to earth. Her garden is located in the Hudson Valley, New York in zone 5b. Just a little colder than my zone 6a. Margaret's website: A Way to Garden has been named the best gardening website by The New York Times.

    Gestalt Garden with Felder Rushing

Felder Rushing speaks to us from NPR's Mississippi Public Broadcasting. Yes, Mississippi. Felder is a riot to listen too. He is very laid back and quite southern. This is a call-in show and some even call as far north as my own Pennsylvania. Even though a lot of the information is pertinent to the south I find Felder super interesting and even enjoy his so-called "cheesy music" which he plays once during every broadcast. Visit The Gestalt Gardener's website.

You Bet Your Garden with Mike McGrath

You Bet Your Garden is a spirited call-in program from Philadelphia, PA  with many tips and explanations for the concerned gardener. Mike McGrath makes sure to find out where each caller is calling from and gives them a great amount of information to help what ails them including an in-depth A-Z list on his website of just about anything you can think of in Garden Answers.

In the Garden with Andre Viette

In the Garden is a three-hour call-in show hosted by Andre Viette, and sometimes Mark Viette, whose family owns a nursery in the beautiful  Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Callers are encouraged to call a toll-free number from all over the US on Saturday mornings from 8 - 11 am. Read more online here.

    Let's Argue About Plants

This podcast is hosted by Fine Gardening's Editor-in-Chief Steve Aitken and Senior Editor Danielle Sherry. This one is not a call-in show but, as the title states, a show about two experienced gardeners discussing their individual views around plants.

    On The Ledge

For you houseplant lovers the podcast On The Ledge, hosted by Jane Perrone,  is all about indoor gardening. Anyone who loves plants, in general, has at least a few houseplants, and some of us have many. However, this area of gardening seems to me to be a neglected one, and so Jane's podcast is a perfect one to fill the void.

    The Sod Show

If you love the idea of English gardens and are interested in hearing from some of the giants of horticulture who manage great gardens in England, then The Sod Show is for you. Horticulturist, Peter Donegan, is the host of this award-winning podcast, with lovely Irish and British accents to treat your ears as well as your gardening heart.

So there you have it. My current list of favorites.

Thanks for this list - I will definitely check out some of them. Can I offer another one! I started Our Plant Stories in 2023. As a former BBC Radio producer it combines twin passions: audio and plants.
I seek out people's stories about plants, it could be a plant that reminds them of home or something they have grown to love and then I find someone who shares the passion for that plant for a conversation before we all learn how to grow the plant.

I might have to check out a couple of these, thanks for sharing. I don't listen to podcasts that much unless it's a business or self improvement training. Funny thing like the idea of listening while gardening but think the bird chirps would drown it out. It's unreal sometimes.

Well, listening to the birds is pretty cool too. 🙂
