Learn how to make this fall leaf garland DIY with a free template to adorn your mantel with all the beautiful colors of autumn.

felt fall leaf garland DIY tutorial

There's something about the soft coziness of felt that makes me think of fall. Though I do like the look of neutral fall decor, sometimes I want color. Especially with all the deep rich colors of autumn. A while back I made a pretty felt flower wreath with fall colors. This year I decided to make a fall leaf garland for our mantel.

For this fall leaf garland DIY start by printing out the leaf template above on cardstock and cut out each leaf.

    Tracing leaf form on felt

Then trace the leaf patterns on pieces of felt and cut them out.

Next, hot glue each leaf onto a floral wire stem in the center, covering the entire length of the leaf and leaving enough wire for wrapping.

    Wrapping felt leaf onto rope

Measure out how long you want your garland and cut the sisal rope to length. Hold it up to the mantel and drape it the way you want it to look.  (I always give myself a little extra just in case.)

Then start at one end and wrap a leaf onto the sisal rope. Add another leaf overlapping the previous leaf slightly. Continue adding leaves until you fill-up the garland.

    Overlapping leaves on garland

You can overlap them as tightly or loosely as you want. Keep in mind the tighter you overlap, the more leaves you will need to finish the garland. If you have a long mantel as we do, that can be a lot of leaf tracing and cutting.

Once you have the garland hanging on the mantel you can bend and twist the leaves to make it look more natural and full.

It's so festive. I love it!

Your garland is adorable! I just cut a few felt leaves earlier today for our simple homeschool board. I’m late starting it. I was just going to glue them into a natural cord, but i think it would be worth the trip to get a couple of supplies. I have floral wire but it’s not covered with a soft material for protection.

So glad you like it, Julie. Standard floral wire should work too but it's up to you.

I'm with you when it comes to fall, I like the colors. Nuetral is soft and pretty as well but it just doesn't speak fall. Great project and so easy to make which I love. I was on a walk the other morning noticing dried oak leaves everywhere. I'm thinking about grabbing some and making a wreath and maybe adding a few felt leaves like yours for a splash of color.

Thanks Carole. We have more oak leaves than I could ever wish for. And, as I'm sure you know, they are slow to break down which would make for a great wreath. I've thought about it many times but the leaves here in my area stay pretty green until late fall when I'm getting ready for Christmas. Hmmm, maybe I can make a Thanksgiving oak leaf wreath. Thanks as always for stopping by.
