This Italian stromboli recipe is filled with classic Italian meats and cheeses wrapped up in dough and baked in the oven for a warm and hearty dish.

When my husband was a teenager, he worked in a pizza shop. We met in college, and after we had been dating for a while, I went to visit him in his hometown.
It was on this trip that I first tasted Stromboli. A big fan of Italian food, I had already experienced many kinds of pizza, calzones, subs, and hoagies (hot subs), but I never had stromboli.

Stromboli vs Calzone
If you haven't had stromboli, it's sort of like a calzone or a panini. However, in the stromboli, there is no ricotta cheese or pizza sauce, and a stromboli is not pressed like a panini sandwich but baked like a pizza.
What You'll Need
- Pizza dough - We bought frozen pizza dough at the grocery store. You can also use bread dough.
- Mix of Italian meat - ham, Genoa salami, and sweet Italian sausage
- Cheeses - provolone and mozzarella
- Olive oil
- Spices - oregano, garlic powder, onion powder

Making the Stromboli
Step 1. Roll the dough into a ball and place it in a large mixing bowl with a little oil on the bottom, and cover tightly with plastic. Let it rise at room temperature for about 1.5 hours.
Step 2. Roll out the dough onto a lightly floured surface into a large rectangular shape about 14 inches long.
Step 3. Start layering the meats and cheeses in the center of the dough in a long column on top of each other. (see image above)
Step 4. Fold one side of the dough over to the other edge and tuck under or crimp at the top and bottom. Repeat with the other side.
Step 5. Use a sharp knife to make slits along the top for ventilation. Brush with olive oil and sprinkle the spices all over.
Step 6. Bake at 400 degrees on a pizza stone for 20 minutes. You can also use a baking sheet or sheet pan, but it may take a little longer to cook. You want the stromboli to be golden brown, see the cheese bubbling.

Stromboli Filling Variations
We like it with lots of Italian meats and cheeses, but you can get creative with the filling.
- Traditional - Italian meats and cheese such as capicola, salami, pepperoni, mozzarella, and provolone.
- Vegetable - Sauteed onions, olives, peppers, and mushrooms with provolone and mozzarella
- American (kids like this) - Virginia baked ham and white American cheese.
This Italian stromboli is good on its own, but you can serve it with a little dipping sauce like pizza sauce, marinara, or ranch dressing if you like.

Many years later, my husband still makes it for family and friend gatherings, especially in the winter for parties like the Super Bowl. Give it a try. I know you'll love it.
