    Homemade Hot Honey

    by Patti Estep · Nov 29, 2024

Two jars of hot honey with one open over a stack of several of the same jars and honey sticks.

Make a batch of this 3 ingredient homemade hot honey to give to all your foodie friends this holiday season.

Small jars of hot honey with wooden honey sticks.

Every year I make homemade gifts for family and friends during the holidays. This year my foodie gift is a simple hot honey recipe. I've already used it with some friends for Friendsgiving on a charcuterie board. It tasted great with different cheeses.

Hot honey ingredient including jars, labels, red pepper flakes, wooden honey sticks and a bottle of honey.

    How to Make Hot Honey

    Ingredients

    • Honey
    • Red Pepper Flakes aka Crushed Red Pepper or Chili Pepper
    • Hot Sauce (Franks or Tabasco)
Stirring hot honey mixture on the stove.

    Instructions

Step 1. Combine honey, pepper flakes, and hot sauce in a heavy saucepan.

Hot honey on the stove starting to simmer.

Step 2. Bring to a simmer (bubbles on the edges) and reduce the heat. Stir a few times, lower the heat, and allow the peppers to infuse the honey for about 20 minutes.

Step 3. Remove the mixture from the heat and let sit for a few minutes to cool slightly.

Straining the hot honey with a fine mesh strainer into a plastic container.

Step 4. Strain the honey mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a pouring pitcher or a flexible plastic container.

Step 5. Pour the strained honey into another glass or plastic container with a tight-fitted lid or divide it up into small containers for gifting.

Note: You can let some of the pepper flakes slip through the strainer if you want. (see jar above on the right) This would be good for those who love hot food as leaving in some chili flakes will make it a little hotter.

    How to Use Hot Honey

    • Set it on a charcuterie board to drizzle over cheese.
    • Drizzle it over pizza.
    • Use it on fried chicken, baked chicken, or chicken wings.
    • Spread a little on any sandwich like you would mayo or mustard.
    • Use it to flavor popcorn for a sweet and savory twist.
    • Add a little to your favorite vinaigrette recipe.
    • Add a bit to your tea.
    • Serve it with biscuits or rolls.

This spicy honey makes a great stocking stuffer. The recipe makes enough to fill 12 (2 oz) jars. However, you can obviously make more, or pour it into larger containers if you like.

    Instructions

    Notes

    1. The nutrition facts are for 1 jar (2 ounces) of honey. In reality, a serving would be less than a teaspoon. There are approximately 12 teaspoons per jar so the actual nutritional values can be divided by 12. For example: one teaspoon of the hot honey would be about 29 calories.
    2. You can allow some of the pepper flakes in the hot honey for those who like it hot. Extra chili pepper flakes will make it hotter.
    3. This hot honey does not need to be refrigerated and should last for months as long as you keep it in a cool dry place with a tight fitted lid.
