Baked chicken wings with a citrus spice rub are a great, healthy way to serve your friends on any occasion with all of the flavor and no extra fat. A great low carb appetizer that you can enjoy and still feel like you're not missing out.

Chicken wings are a good source of protein, and they don't have to be deep fried or lathered in melted butter and hot sauce to taste good.

This recipe uses a citrus rub on wings that are baked in a hot oven until crispy. Tasty, and a great healthy alternative to serve at any party or just for yourself. They are a great low carb, high protein dish for game-day or Friday night movies at home.

    Making Citrus Baked Chicken Wings

    1. Wash the chicken wings and pat them dry with paper towels.
    2. Make a spice rub with some of your favorite spices and add lots of lime and lemon juice and zest.
    3. Toss the wings with the spice rub in a large plastic bag.
    4. Spread the wings onto a foil-lined sheet pan sprayed with cooking oil for easy cleanup.
    5. Bake in a 450-degree oven for 40 minutes, turning every 10-15 minutes, or they may start to stick to the foil.
    6. Serve the chicken wings with any dressing you like. These were served with my homemade blue cheese dip, a traditional accompaniment to wings, made from scratch.

You might also like to make homemade ranch dressing to offer on the side as a dipping sauce. Your favorite blue cheese dressing with a few celery sticks would taste great too.

Bowl of spices and citrus zest.

    Citrus Rub Ingredients

    • hot paprika
    • thyme
    • oregano
    • parsley
    • onion powder
    • garlic powder
    • kosher salt
    • black pepper
    • coriander
    • Zest and Juice of 1 lime and 1 lemon

You can usually buy the chicken wings at the store in this two part form. However, if you can only find whole wings, you have two choices. Make them as is for a larger portion. Or, you can use a sharp knife and cut them apart yourself before adding the rub. Typically, whole wings are cheaper, so you will save some money. However, wings are pretty inexpensive already.

If you tend to enjoy a low carb diet, these are perfect for parties and maybe even a main course option.

Yum! We love anything citrus - bet the rub would be terrific on chicken breasts and boneless pork chops too!

      Thanks, Patti - pinned. 🙂

Me too Sheila. I haven't tried it on pork chops but it was good on chicken breasts. That's next on the list. Thanks for the suggestion.
