Slice loaf of apple bread on a wire rack over the batter in a pan.

This simple apple bread loaf recipe is fresh and tasty and makes a great gift to pass out to family, friends, and neighbors during the holiday season.

Apple season typically starts in the fall and lasts well into winter. Though you can buy some apples all year round, if you are looking for ways to utilize fresh seasonal apples consider making a simple apple loaf bread.

I like these because they also make a great gift for all kinds of reasons. A new neighbor, a sick friend or a holiday gift for everyone on your list.

I found these mini apples sponsored by special olympics and had to try them.

Small apple quartered and very thin apple slices on a cutting board.

    Making Apple Bread

Step 1. After washing, quartering and coring the apples I used a mandolin to create extra thin slices. However, if you don't want to take the time to slice the apples, you could use chopped or grated apples.

I also left the peel on because it was nice and thin on these apples, but you can peel them first if you like.

Step 2. Toss the apple slices with some fresh lemon juice to keep them from browning while you make the batter.

Wet ingredients in a large mixing bowl including butter, sugar, eggs, cider and vanilla extract.

Step 4. In a larger bowl, cream together butter and sugar. Then mix in the eggs, vanilla, and cider.

Step 5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients a little at a time, mixing well each time.

Step 6. Fold in the sliced apples, keeping some of the slices to decorate the top.

    Step 7. Grease and flour a 9 x 5 inch loaf pan.

Tip: You can also line it with parchment paper, leaving extra over the edge to help lift the loaf out of the pan.

Step 8. Pour the apple bread batter into the pan and decorate the top with the extra apple slices

Step 9. In a small bowl, stir flour, melted butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon together to create a crumb topping.

Step 10. Sprinkle the crumb topping on top and bake for 50 minutes in a preheated 350 degree oven.

Allow the apple loaf to cool on a wire rack before removing it from the pan and slicing.

What Kind of Apples Can I Use?

Any fresh apples will do. However, I think the best apples are those that are juicy and have a crisp texture, like honeycrisp, braeburn, fuji, gala, or granny smith.

Apple bread partially slice on a wire rack with a few mini red apples on the side.

Slice up your yummy bread and serve it plain or with a little butter and/or jam for a healthy, tasty breakfast or snack.

    • 1 3/4 cups flour
    • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 1 cup apples thinly sliced
    • 1 lemon
    • 1/2 cup butter room temperature
    • 1 cup sugar
    • 1/3 cup apple cider
    • 2 large eggs
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    Crumb Topping

    • 1/4 cup flour
    • 2 tablespoons melted butter
    • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
    • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

    Instructions

    • Grease and flour a 9 x 5 inch bread loaf pan.
    • Core apples, cut into quarters, and use a mandolin to make thin slices.
    • Pour lemon juice over the apple slices and set aside.
    • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.
    • In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar.
    • Add eggs and mix well.
    • Add vanilla and cider and mix well.
    • Add the flour mixture to the butter and sugar mixture a little at a time mixing well between.
    • Fold in the apples, but keep some for the top garnish.
    • Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan.
    • Place a layer of apple slices on top.
    • Mix the crumble topping together in a small bowl.
    • Sprinkle the crumble topping over the apples.
    • Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes.

    Notes

If you are using a metal pan, your bread may bake quicker. Check it at 30-40 minutes to see if it's done.
While you want the crumb topping to be crispy, if you notice the top is browning too quickly, cover the pan with aluminum foil until it is done baking.
