Remember this ugly vanity. There really was nowhere to go but up with this one.
My 20 something-year-old girls had long outgrown this fun Little Mermaid theme.
That vanity makeover was the first project on the list and I'm just as surprised as everyone how good it turned out. The best part. It cost nothing to create. Paint, glaze and a little rub n buff, already on hand were all I needed to make this vanity shine.
I added two new purchases this week. A new white shower curtain with a little texture, and a set of plush bathroom rugs. The rugs were a total splurge at $49.45. That's half of my budget bathroom makeover! But I found it hard to find any reasonably priced rugs so I decided to go for it. This way my girls and any guests will have a little extra luxury when they visit. I was able to pick them up on sale at Target, use my Target card and I had a $5 gift card so that saved me about $20.
The original window got a big facelift too.
It looks much cleaner and so bright. There is a blind underneath the cornice for privacy when needed. However, I love all the natural light the window lets in.
I decided to reuse one of the old wall sconces as a mini shelf. This bathroom is no longer used for kids so a candle works great and I made sure it was far enough away from anything flammable, or somewhere where it might easily get knocked down.
In case you missed the easy wood shelves tutorial last week, here's another look.
I also bought an asparagus fern for the window and moved an orchid from my plant stash downstairs to add a pop of green and nature to this space. Considering all the light that comes in now I think they will be very happy.
Budget Bathroom Makeover Costs
- Vanity Makeover - $0.00 (how great!)
- Fabric Covered Cornice - $12.69
- Wooden Shelves - $21.18
- Shower Curtain - $14.00
- 3 Bath Rugs - $49.45
- Asparagus fern - $4.99

Only $2.31 over budget!
I probably didn't need to buy that asparagus fern but I do love the way it looks on the windowsill.

That vanity turned out so amazing! It is so nice now, who knew that beauty was under there- you did! So many of the details are favorites of mine- the wood shelves, the fabric on the cornice, the new shower curtain, and the new fern. You can never go wrong with plants! Congrats
Patti Estep
Thanks Jackie. I'm so glad I joined the challenge. It was a much needed update.

It turned out so good! Great job with the vanity, hard to believe it's the same!
Patti Estep
Thanks Brooke. It's amazing what a little paint can do. Would you believe we had these ugly cabinets all over the house? Some have been replaced, removed or painted but we still have a few left.

Patti this transformation is sooooo good! I love the way the vanity turned out. And wow to all the natural light in the room now!
marie
Love the bathroom. Ditch the rug by the toilet, germs, germs, germs. Get one that sits out aways of the splatter zone.. Great job.
Patti Estep
Lol. Thanks Marie. I guess since I only had girls that didn't occur to me.
Mary Minard
I think this is your most impressive makeover yet. You are inspiring me to make over my bathroom!
Patti Estep
Thanks Mary. You should and can do it!!
Jen @Jenron Designs
This is amazing you can absolutely see where you have transitioned this in to a "big girl" bathroom. The cornice make the space feel so modern and the paint color is fresh and spa like, nice design choices.
