I put some dried Mandarins in my husband's stocking at Christmas. They were delicious and sweet and I wondered what they would taste like if I tried drying some in the oven. Since I don't have a dehydrator I dried these in the oven.

    Stacked whole fresh Mandarin/Clementine oranges.

    Mandarin or Clementine?

I would normally call these Clementines. However, the bag they came in called them Mandarin oranges, and the ones at Trader Joe's were also called Mandarins.

I did some research and found that Clementines are a type of Mandarin orange. They are both easy to peel, have fewer seeds and the Clementines are typically a little smaller.

How to Dry Mandarin Orange Sections

Step 1. Cover a large baking tray with parchment paper.

Step 2. Peel the oranges making sure to remove any of the white pith.

Step 3. Arrange the sections into rows leaving a little space between each one.

Step 4. Bake the orange sections in a 200 degree oven for 1.5 hours.

Step 5. Remove the baking pan from the oven and flip the oranges over. Continue baking for another 1.5 hours or until most of the moisture is gone.

Parchment paper with three whole fresh Mandarin oranges at the top left and many scattered dried sections in the mid-section.

Step 6. Remove the parchment with oranges and let them cool.

Step 7. Store the dried Mandarins in an airtight jar or container.

Note: These are not as sweet as the Trader Joe's oranges. However, their bag says one of the ingredients is sugar. They were still sweet and tasty. One day I might try sprinkling a little sugar on some before drying them. Maybe powdered sugar would be good.

Anyway, it was a fun experiment with a tasty and healthier outcome.
