How to Make a Pinecone Wreath

Learn how to make a pinecone wreath with mini Hemlock pinecones and a wire hanger. It's a great natural decoration for the holidays and into winter.

We have Hemlock trees that line the side of our property and a few in the back. That means tons of mini pinecones for me to craft with. A while back, I made mini tabletop Pinecone Christmas trees. They looked great on the chest in our foyer.

Today I'm making sweet little wreaths to hang in our kitchen window. They will serve as both Christmas and winter decor, as I plan on leaving them up for a while.

Supplies for mini pinecone wreaths including a wire hanger, pliers, glue gun, glue sticks, mini pinecones, and cedar branches.

    Supplies

    • Needle Nose Pliers
    • Scissors
    • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
    • Dark wire coat hanger
    • Mini pinecones
    • Fresh cedar pieces
    • Thin green velvet ribbon
    • Disposable Gloves (optional)

    Making Pinecone Wreaths

Step 1. Create a wire wreath form with a basic wire hanger. Open up the hanger (see above). I like black because any open space will blend and look like a shadow to the eye. However, you can use a gold one or a white one as is, or paint them black first.

A wire coat hanger cut down and molded into a circle.

Step 2. Wrap the end without a hook around to make a circle in the size you like, then cut off the excess. Take your time working with the wire, shape a nice circle to create a wire frame. Then wrap the end around the top of the circle to secure it in place. You can use your hands for most of this, but a pair of pliers may also be helpful, and you can use them to cut the excess wire.

Step 3. Start at the top on one side and begin hot gluing the pinecones to the wire. Place the pinecones on either side at an angle. Then fill in where needed.

Note: You may want to wear disposable gloves to protect your fingers, as there will be a lot of hot glue, and the pinecones are so small.

Step 4. Add in pieces of fresh cedar for contrast and tie a small green velvet bow at the neck to finish the look.

It would take some time to create one for each chair, but doesn't this look great?

I ended up making two to hang in our kitchen window. This picture doesn't do them justice due to the lighting.

Here's a little close-up of one of the wreaths in the window. They are simple, but I love the way they look.

DIY Mini Pine Cone Wreath Craft

This natural, beautiful, DIY pinecone wreath is made with tiny Hemlock pinecones, a wire hanger, bits of fresh cedar, and a thin green velvet ribbon.

Total Time1 hour hr 30 minutes mins
    Course: Wreath

    Equipment

    • Needle nose pliers
    • Scissors
    • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
    • Disposable Gloves optional

    Materials

    • Dark wire coat hanger
    • Mini pinecones
    • Fresh cedar pieces
    • Thin green velvet ribbon

    Instructions

    • Undo the neck of a wire coat hanger.
    • Create a small circle while keeping the hanging portion by bending the hanger into shape.
    • Cut off excess and wrap the end around the top edge.
    • Start hot gluing pinecones along the circle at varying angles.
    • Fill in with more pinecones and pieces of cedar.
    • Tie on a velvet bow at the neck with ribbon.
    • Hang on a window, wall, chair, or anywhere you want a little natural holiday spirit.

    Notes

If you don't have a dark hanger, you can paint one with craft or spray paint first before creating the wreath.
You could also make this with a mini grapevine wreath instead of a wire hanger, but it wouldn't have the handy, dandy built in hook. However, you can always create a loop with some floral wire and attach it to the back of the frame.
You can also substitute different greenery for the cedar or mini berries, but the cedar lasts a long time.
You can add any color ribbon you like, or fill in the neck portion with more pinecones and skip the ribbon.
Small hooks with suction cups work great on windows to hang your wreath.
