Organizing Ideas: Week 2 $100 Office Makeover Challenge

January 10, 2018 by Patti Estep 17 Comments

During this 2nd week of the $100 Room Challenge, I'll be discussing organizing ideas and a game plan to makeover my office/craft room.

During this 2nd week of the $100 Room Challenge, I'll be discussing organizing ideas and a game plan to makeover my office/craft room.

Welcome back. Have you been wondering what is going on with this makeover? This week I am all about organizing ideas and all the many, many items in this office/craft room. Did I say many? So much stuff. Good stuff, stuff I need, stuff I don't need and some plain old trash.

If you are coming here for the first time, this is week 2 of the $100 Room Makeover Challenge. You can read all about it and see what went on in week 1 here.

Budget Office Makeover - Organizing Ideas

    Week 1       Week 2        Week 3      Week 4       Week 5

    Organizing ideas for office desk.

Organizing Idea No. 1 - Sort Everything

Designate every item into one of the following categories:

Keep: These are those items you must keep. You can further sort them into those that you need easy access to, and those you use less often.

Donate: Anything you no longer want but still may have value to someone else.

Move: Items you don't want to give away but don't belong in this space. For example: I had extra pillows and bedding in the closet but now that the bed is gone I've moved them to the linen closet.

Trash: Obvious, I could not believe how much trash I had.  😕

Organizing Idea No. 2 - Measure Everything

Write down the length, width and depth of the following:

This way when you are shopping you'll know what will fit.
P.S. take a tape measure with you when you go to the store.

    • Closet space
    • Tabletop space
    • Desktop space
    • Space under tables
    • Shelving unit space
    Organizing ideas using riser shelves.

Organizing Idea No. 3 - Shop Your House

Look for items in the basement, attic or other rooms that aren't being used. In the top photo you will notice that I removed the daybed and replaced it with a table. This is the same table I used to use as a desk. It has a lot more room underneath to store things. I also found an old wooden shelving unit in my daughters room that wasn't being used. This is perfect for holding all my props for blog photos.

This space already feels ten times lighter and a joy to be in.
Stay tuned. Next week I'm sharing a couple of fun organization hacks.

    Money spent to date:

4 Large plastic containers at Home Depot
Letter Size File Box and hanging files for the left side of my desk.
2 Shelf Organizer for the right side of my desk.

Total = $60.76  ..... leaving $39.24 left in the budget.

My craft/room to store everything is an absolute mess. So I can't wait to see what you do with this space. I'm intimidated by all the collected stuff so look forward to seeing how you organize it all.

Doesn't decluttering feel so good! And I'm always amazed by the amount of trash I find when going through a space too 🙂

I'm not looking forward to the organizing portion in my office. Your method makes it sound a bit easier though.

Love these organizing ideas, Patti! Especially the one about measuring. I never think to do that and then I'm standing at the store, trying to estimate with by holding my arms out!

Great ideas and I love "Shop your House" So many times we run to the store for everything when it's so easy to use and improve on what we already have. Awesome tips and I sure do enjoy these makeovers. Keep up the good work!
