This DIY Christmas candle centerpiece can be put together in 30 minutes with clippings from your yard, a fresh Christmas tree, or evergreen bundles from the local nursery.

Wooden box with a pillar candle in the middle surrounded by fresh evergreen cuttings.

Who doesn't love fresh evergreen decorations at Christmas time? This easy Christmas centerpiece filled with evergreens and a candle is the perfect table decoration for our Christmas decor. I love using natural elements and the box container makes it easy to pick up and move when we sit down to eat.

    Instructions

Step 1. Fill your box with clean empty cans and jars that are a little shorter than the sides of the box with one smaller in the middle.

A glass vase with a large white pillar candle set in the middle of the cans on a small jar.

Step 2. Place a white pillar candle into a glass cylinder and set it on top of the smaller jar in the middle.  I used a small mason jar with a smooth lid.

Angle showing water in the cans about 2/3 full.

Step 3. Fill the jars and cans with about 2/3 full of water.

Step 4. Next, fill the cans/jars with evergreens on the outer edge. This works best with those that spill over like these cedar branches.

More evergreens including pines stems and juniper greens with berries into the cans.

Step 6. Continue to fill in the box with evergreens of different sizes and textures.

Step 7. Look at the centerpiece from all sides and angles and fill in with more greenery as needed.

    Tips and Options

    • Check the water levels with your finger and refill as needed to keep the centerpiece looking good for weeks.
    • Trim any greenery that's too close to the candle. I probably won't even light this candle but if you want to you can. You can also use a battery operated LED flameless candle.
    • I used a simple glass cylinder vase as my candle holder but you can use a different shaped hurricane vase or different colored candle.
    • Use trimmings of evergreen plant material from your backyard. If you don't have any you can easily find them at big box stores, grocery stores, and local nurseries this time of year. And yes, you can use artificial stems too. In that case, you do not need water.
    • This year I'm using a box I made years ago for a simple wooden box centerpiece post. You can use any box or basket you like as long as it has a sturdy flat bottom for the cans.
    • I kept my color scheme pretty green but you can make it your own by adding some small pine cones, stems of red berries, or evergreens in different shades such as golden cypress. Maybe even tuck in a few fairy lights for visual interest.

Doesn't this Christmas table centerpiece look great with all our red and white place settings?  I think it would look equally good on a coffee table or entry table.

    Course: Centerpiece
    Yield: 1

    Equipment

    • Clippers

    Materials

    • Wooden Box (12 x 12 x 6)
    • Empty cans or bottles
    • Fresh evergreen clippings
    • Glass cylinder vase
    • White pillar candle

    Instructions

    • Fill your box with clean empty cans or bottles without the tops.
    • Place a shorter can or bottle in the center to hold and lift up the vase with the candle.
    • Place a pillar candle into a cylindrical vase and set it in the middle.
    • Fill the other cans and bottles 2/3 full with water.
    • Start placing your plant material into the cans on the outer edges using those that can spill over the sides.
    • Then fill in with other evergreens until the box is full.
    • Make sure to check the box from all sides and adjust as necessary and/or fill in with more plant cuttings.
    • Set the box in the middle of your dining table or on a buffet for all to enjoy.

    Notes

I used mostly empty cans from our recycling but you can also use small mason jars, cups, mugs or vases to hold the greenery.
You can also find glass cylinder vases and pillar candles at dollar stores and craft stores. Chances are good that they will be on sale this time of year.
