They have a wonderful chewy texture and hints of caramel that's different from a traditional brownie. Simple ingredients you probably already have at home are all you need to create these fudgy chocolate brownies without white sugar.
Box brownies are fine but this easy recipe is much tastier than any box mix and might become your new favorite recipe.
You Will Need
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Making Brown Sugar Brownies
Sift or use a whisk to mix your dry ingredients including flour, cocoa, salt, and baking powder.
Next, you cream together the butter and sugar just like most cookies and brownie recipes. However, instead of the classic white sugar and butter combination, you will use brown sugar.
Baking Tip: You need to grease your baking pan. Instead of throwing away the paper wrapper from your butter, use it to grease your baking pan.
Make sure you blend the butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla well before adding the flour mixture.
Divide the flour into half or even 1/3 amounts. This will make it easier to mix in without a blast of flour going everywhere.
Spoon the batter into the baking pan and spread it evenly across the dish.
This bakes for about 20 minutes and you can tell when it's done because the edges will start to come away from the side.
Allow your brownies to cool slightly before cutting them into squares and moving them to a cooling rack.
Serve immediately or place the brownies into an airtight container to store for a few days. Or toss them in a freezer bag for a future treat.

I used dark brown sugar and they taste great. I did reduce it to 3/4 cup rather than a whole cup, as I don't like my brownies too sweet, and it was just right for me.
My cooking time was quite a bit longer - 34 minutes for them to test as done with a toothpick.
I will make these again!

Sounds great Wendy. Thanks for sharing.

These brownies look delicious. I'm confused about the butter, though. The recipe calls for 1/2 cup of butter, which is one stick. The picture appears to show two sticks in the bowl. Thanks!

I'm sorry for the confusion. When I first made these brownies I made them in a larger baking pan but wasn't happy with the results. When I made it a second time I used a smaller baking dish and forgot to re-take a photo of the butter and sugar. The recipe card is correct. It's 1/2 cup or 1 stick of butter. I will remove the image to prevent others from being confused. Thanks for letting me know.
